Shaving the Male Client

Materials needed:

• Shaving cream or soap
• Shaving brush
• Razor - blade or electric
• Mirror
• After shave lotion
• Tissues
• Bath towel
• Face towel
• Washcloth
• Wash basin or sink
• Warm water ( for razor blade )
• Disposable gloves

Procedure:

1. Explain what you are going to do
2. Wash your hands
3. Obtain materials listed above
4. Provide privacy (close door, pull curtains)
5. Raise bed to convenient working height. Lower rail on the side you will be working on
6. Place client in an upright position in bed ( or assist to sit by bathroom sink, if possible )
7. Shaving with a blade razor:
   1. Put on disposable gloves
   2. Wet washcloth with warm water. Place on client's face for a few minutes
   3. Apply shaving cream and lather the face
   4. Hold the skin taut and shave in the direction of hair growth
   5. Rinse the blade razor when necessary
8. Shaving with an electric razor:
   1. Put on disposable gloves
   2. Make sure face is clean and dry. Do not apply shaving cream or water to the face.
   3. Turn on razor
   4. Hold skin taut and shave in the direction of hair growth
   5. Turn off razor
9. Remove towel
10. Remove and discard gloves
11. Make sure client is safe and comfortable
12. Place bed in the lowest position ( raise side rail in needed )
13. Clean materials and store in proper location
14. Place soiled bath towel in laundry container to be washed
15. Wash your hands
16. Record what you have done. Report any unusual condition.
