Giving a Shampoo

Materials needed:

Procedure:

  1. Explain what you are going to do
  2. Wash your hands
  3. Obtain materials listed above
  4. Provide privacy (close door, pull curtain)
  5. Raise bed to convenient working height. Lower rail on side where you are working
  6. Position client for shampoo - at sink, in tub or shower, or in bed with trough under head and neck
  7. Brush and comb hair
  8. Have client hold folded washcloth over eyes to protect from shampoo
  9. Wet hair from front to back with warm water
  10. Put small amount of shampoo in palm of your hand
  11. Apply shampoo to scalp; lather from front to back, rubbing gently
  12. Rinse thoroughly with warm water
  13. Repeat steps 10 through 12
  14. Apply conditioner, according to directions
  15. Wrap client's head in bath towel
  16. Bath/shower stall - help client out and assist with drying body and hair
  17. Bed shampoo - remove trough from bed. Towel dry hair
  18. Dry hair using dryer, if available. Arrange hair according to client's wishes
  19. Make sure client is safe and comfortable. Replace eye glasses, hearing aids, if appropriate.
  20. Place bed in lowest position ( raise side rail if needed )
  21. Clean material and store in proper location
  22. Place soiled bath towel in laundry container to be washed
  23. Wash your hands
  24. Record what you have done. Report any unusual conditions.
