Giving a Back Rub
Material needed:
Small towel
Lotion
Procedure:
Explain what you are going to do
Wash your hands
Obtain materials listed above
Provide privacy (close door, pull curtains)
Raise bed to convenient working height and lock wheels. Lower rail on side where you are working
Lower head of bed to a level comfortable for client- as low as possible
Remove clothing from upper body
Place client on side or abdomen to expose entire back
Put small amount of lotion on your hands. Rub hands together to warm lotion
Use correct body mechanics. Face head of bed, one foot slightly forward, knees bent
Start at lower back moving upward toward the shoulder. Apply pressure using palms of bath hands. Use long, firm but gentle strokes - up - out and down. Repeat several times
Remove excess lotion with towel
Help client to put on clothes
Make sure client is safe and comfortable
Place bed in lowest position (raise side rails if needed)
Wash your hands and record what you did and any skin problems
