Brushing Teeth

Materials needed:

• Toothbrush
• Toothpaste
• Glass of cool water
• Mouthwash
• Emesis basin or small plastic bowl
• Face towel
• Paper towel
• Disposable gloves

Procedure:

1. Explain what you are going to do
2. Wash your hands
3. Obtain materials above
4. Provide privacy (close door, pull curtains)
5. Spread paper towel on work area. Arrange supplies on paper towel
6. Raise bed to convenient working height. Lower rail on side where you are working
7. Assist client to an upright position, or turn on side if unable to sit up
8. Place face towel under client's chin and over chest
9. Put on gloves
10. Assist client with self-care as necessary
11. Hold toothbrush over emesis basin and pour a little water over the brush to moisten. Apply toothpaste
12. Brush clients teeth ( if he or she can not )
13. Have client rinse mouth with water. Hold emesis basin so client can spit into it
14. Have client rinse with mouthwash. Hold emesis basin so the client can spit in it
15. Wipe clients mouth with face towel
16. Remove face towel
17. Remove and discard gloves
18. Make sure client is safe and comfortable
19. Place the bed in the lowest position ( raise rails if needed )
20. Clean equipment and store in proper location
21. Wipe work surface with paper towel and discard
22. Place soiled face towel in laundry container to be washed
23. Wash your hands
24. Record what you have done, how client reacted and tolerated, and time this procedure was done.
25. Report any unusual conditions
