Universal Precautions and Medical Asepsis Rules for Obtaining and Handling Specimens

  • Wash hands before putting on gloves
  • Always wear gloves when obtaining a urine, stool, or sputum specimen
  • Pour urine into container carefully; do not splatter or allow urine to contaminate the outside of the container
  • Wear goggles when there is risk of splashing urine
  • Do not fill the urine specimen container to the top to avoid the chance of spilling over
  • Place stool specimen in container carefully - avoid contaminating the outside of the container
  • Have client cough directly into the sputum specimen in container, securing the lid, and cleaning and storing material
  • Remove and discard gloves after placing specimen in container, securing the lid, and cleaning and storing materials
  • Wash hands after removing gloves, goggles, or mask
  • Dispose of used lancets according to agency policy and community regulations
