Wheelchair Safety
Place chair next to client's stronger side before making the transfer
Put footrests out of the way before client gets in or out of the chair
Make sure both wheel brakes are locked before client get in or out of the chair
Replace footrests in proper position, and assist client, as needed to put feet on footrests after being seated
Make sure client is in a comfortable and safe sitting position before releasing the wheel brakes
Release both wheel brakes before attempting to move the chair
Make sure client's clothing or lap blanket does not trail on the floor or become caught in the wheels.
If the client likes to be up in the wheelchair for extended periods of time, watch the skin on the buttocks for redness and open areas, if seen contact the nurse as soon as possible.
