Types of Medications

Capsules - small gelatin container that holds medications

Lozenges - flat discs containing medication in a flavored base. They are Held in the mouth where they slowly release medications

Tablets - dry, powered drugs that have been formed into small discs

Ointments - Semi-solid material containing medication. Theses are applied Externally

Suppositories - solid form of medication for insertion into a body cavity, Usually the rectum or vagina. Body temperature causes the Suppository to melt and medication is released

Transdermal Patches - medication is located on a small discs or strip that is Applied to unbroken skin. Drug is absorbed through The skin over a 24 hour period

Elixirs - drug is dissolved in liquid containing alcohol or water and flavor

Suspensions - drug is suspended in a liquid and may be labeled "shake Before use"

Syrups - medication is dissolved in a concentrated sugar solution

Drops - liquid form of medication in a special container that allows one drop At a time to be administered. Usual types are eyedrops, ear drops, Or nose drops

Metered Dose Inhalers ( MDI) - they come in small cylinders, containing a Drug that is inhaled through the mouth in specifically measured Doses
