Assisting With Metered Doses Inhales

Material needed:

• Metered dose inhaler container
• Disposable gloves

Procedure:

1. Explain what you are going to do
2. Check care plan and mediation sheet
3. Wash your hands
4. Obtain material listed above
5. Provide privacy (close door, pull curtains)
6. Help client to wash hands
7. Check label on prescription container for:
   1. Right drug
   2. Right dose
   3. Right client
   4. Right route
   5. Right time

8. Hand metered dose inhaler to client, who then uses it to inhale the medication
9. Have client record medication taken. The caregiver can record if the client is unable
10. Clean inhaler according to manufacturer's instructions and store in proper location
11. Wash your hands, and record what has been done. Report any abnormal conditions to the nurse or family member
