Applying Elastic Stocking

Material needed:

• Clean elastic stocking

Procedure:

1. Explain what you are going to do
2. Wash your hands
3. Obtain material listed above
4. Provide privacy
5. Put client in supine position
6. Expose legs. Check to see that legs are clean and dry
7. Turn stocking inside out. Continue gathering down to heel
8. Place foot of stocking over client's toes, foot, and heel. Fit client's foot into heel and toe portion of stocking
9. Pull leg of stocking up over foot and up the leg. The stocking will turn right side out as you pull it up
10. Adjust stocking to fit smoothly without folds or wrinkles
11. Make sure client is safe and comfortable
12. Wash your hands
13. Record what you have done. Report any abnormal conditions to the nurse or family member
14. Check circulation regularly according to care plan
