Applying Hot Soaks

Material needed:

• Basin
• Hot water
• Cooking thermometer, if available
• Waterproof protector pad
• Towel

Procedure:

1. Explain what you are going to do
2. Wash your hands
3. Obtain material listed above
4. Provide privacy
5. Assist client to comfortable position
6. Place waterproof pad under the area to be socked
7. Fill basin ½ full of water to desired temperature
8. Expose only the part to be soaked
9. Place area to be soaked into the water
10. Check water temperature and skin of area being soaked every 10 minutes. Remove from water if danger signs are noticed
11. Remove body part from water according to time required
12. Write time of removal on paper
13. Pat body part dry. Assist client to replace clothing and to get comfortable
14. Clean and store material in proper location
15. Put used towel in laundry container to be washed
16. Wash your hands
17. Record what you have done. Report any abnormal conditions to the nurse or a family member
