Applying Hot Compresses

Material needed:

Procedure:

  1. Explain what you are going to do
  2. Wash your hands
  3. Provide privacy (close door, pull curtains)
  4. Obtain material listed above
  5. Place waterproof protector pad under the body part where compress is to be applied
  6. Fill basin or container half ( ½ )full of water at desired temperature.
  7. Put on gloves
  8. Place compress in the water
  9. Squeeze out compress and apply to area. Note time applied
  10. Cover compress quickly with plastic wrap. Secure edges of plastic wrap with tape. Cover with a bath towel
  11. Write on paper the time compress was applied
  12. Apply, according to directions, a hot water bag or rubber - protected heating pad over plastic wrap to keep compress hot
  13. Check client skin every 10 minutes for danger signs
  14. Change compress, if cooling occurs
  15. Remove compress according to time required
  16. Write time of removal on paper
  17. Pat area dry with towel. Discard used gauze or compress. Place used cloths or towels in laundry container to be washed
  18. Remove and discard gloves
  19. Wash your hands
  20. Clean and store material in proper location
