Applying Cold Compresses

Material needed:

Procedure:

  1. Explain what you are going to do
  2. Wash your hands
  3. Obtain material listed above
  4. Provide privacy (close door, pull curtains)
  5. Place waterproof protector pad under the body part where compress is to be applied
  6. Fill basin ½ full with ice water
  7. Put on gloves
  8. Place compress in water
  9. Wring out compress and apply to area
  10. Cover compress quickly with plastic wrap. Secure edges of plastic wrap with tape. Cover with bath towel
  11. Write on paper the time compress was applied
  12. Check client's skin every 10 minutes for danger signs (discoloration, numbness, pain)
  13. Change compress if warming occurs
  14. Remove compress according to time required
  15. Write time of removal on paper
  16. Pat area dry with towel. Discard used gauze square or compress. Place used cloths and towels in laundry container to be washed
  17. Remove and discard gloves
  18. Wash your hands
  19. Clean and store material in proper location
  20. Record what you have done and report any abnormal conditions to the nurse or family member
