Applying Elastic Bandages

Material needed:

• Elastic bandages
• Fasteners

Procedure:

1. Explain what you are going to do
2. Wash your hands
3. Obtain material listed above
4. Provide privacy (close door, pull curtains)
5. Assist client to comfortable position - supine for legs and feet; other positions according to care plan and part to be bandaged
6. Expose part. Check to see that it is clean and dry
7. Hold the bandage to the smallest part
8. Apply one end of bandage to the smallest part
9. Wrap two turns to Anchor bandage
10. Continue wrapping in spiral turns upward. Apply firmly but not to tight
11. Fasten end with clip, pin, or tape
12. Wash your hands
13. Record what you have done. Report any abnormal conditions to the nurse or family member
14. Check for proper circulation regularly according to the care plan
