Making an Occupied Bed

Materials Needed:

  • Laundry container
  • Mattress pad, if used
  • Bottom sheet ( flat or fitted )
  • Plastic draw sheet, if used
  • Cotton draw sheet, if used
  • Top sheet
  • Blanket, if used
  • Bedspread, if used
  • Pillow cases
  • Disposable gloves, if needed

    Procedure:

    1. Explain what you are going to do
    2. Wash your hands
    3. Obtain material listed above, and place them in order of use on chair near bed
    4. Provide privacy (close door, pull curtain)
    5. Place laundry container near bed
    6. Raise bed to comfortable working height and lock wheels. Lower rail on side where you are working
    7. Lower head of bed to level comfortable for client - as low as possible
    8. Loosen top bedding at foot of bed
    9. Remove top bedding ( bedspread, quilt ), but leave client covered with one blanket or top sheet
    10. Instruct client to hold top sheet while you remove other top linens
    11. Fold any linens to be reused, such as blanket or quilt. Roll each remaining linen into a ball and discard in laundry container
    12. Help client to roll to side of bed opposite to you and to grasp side rail for support
    13. Roll each piece of bottom linen to center of bed and tuck along client's back
    14. Smooth mattress pad, if used
    15. Place clean bottom sheet, folder lengthwise, in center of bed. Unfold one half and roll to center of bed

      • Fitted sheet - place ends around corners - top and bottom; tuck side of sheet under Mattress
      • Flat sheet - place bottom hem of sheet even with edge of mattress at foot of bed; tuck Top sheet under mattress at head of bed

    16. Miter corner at head end of mattress
    17. Tuck sheet under side of entire mattress. Work from head of bed to foot
    18. Place plastic draw sheet, fold in half, in center third of bed. Unfold and roll to center of bed. Tuck along client's back
    19. Place cotton draw sheet, fold in half, in center of bed, covering entire plastic draw sheet. Unfold and roll to center of bed. Tuck along clients back
    20. Tuck ends of plastic draw sheet and cotton draw sheet under mattress
    21. Help client to roll toward you, over linens to clean side of bed
    22. Raise rail on side where you have been working
    23. Go to other side of bed
    24. Lower side rail
    25. Remove used bottom linens, roll, and discard in laundry container
    26. Pull through all bottom linens. Straighten and tuck under head of mattress. Miter corner of sheet at head of bed. Or fit top and bottom corners of fitted sheet over mattress corners
    27. Help client to roll back to center of bed
    28. Place clean top sheet entirely over the client and remove top linen. Discard in laundry container or fold for reuse
    29. Place blanket and bedspread over sheet
    30. Tuck top sheet, blanket, and bedspread under foot mattress. Give "toe room" for client's feet. Make a miter corner.
    31. Raise side rails
    32. Go to other side of bed. Lower side rails
    33. Smooth and straighten top sheet, blanket, and bedspread. Tuck them under foot of mattress. Give "toe room" for client feet. Make a mitered corner
    34. Make a cuff at top sheet over bedspread
    35. Remove pillow from bed. Remove pillowcase and discard in laundry container
    36. Place clean pillowcase on pillow, and replace pillow under client's head
    37. Make sure client is safe and comfortable
    38. Place bed in lowest position ( raise rails if needed )
    39. Remove laundry container and bring to washing machine or other location as requested by the client
    40. Wash you hands
    41. Record what you did and how the client reacted
