Transferring Client From Bed to Chair, Using Gait Belt
- Explain what you are going to do and how the client can help you
- Wash you hands
- Gather the things you will need (chair, gait belt, shoes, robe)
- Provide privacy (close doors, pull shades)
- Apply transfer belt (Gait Belt)
- Place chair parallel to bed and on clients strong side. If using a wheelchair, lock brakes and move footrest out of way. If bed has wheels, lock the wheels
- Stand directly in front of client
- Make sure clients feet are firmly on the floor
- Have client place fists on bed next to thighs and lean forward
- Grasp transfer belt firmly at each side
- Lock your knees against clients knees to provide additional support and to prevent clients knees from buckling
- Ask client to push fists down on bed and stand on the count of 3
- Pull client into standing position as you straighten knees and legs
- Count to 10 before continuing to allow clients body to adjust to standing position
- Instruct client to :
- Take small steps while turning back to chair until legs touch chair
- Reach back and grasp the farthest arm of the chair, leaning slightly forward while sitting down
- Slide hips back into chair and sit erect
- Make sure client is safe and comfortable
- If in wheelchair, replace footrest and have client put feet on them
- Place necessary items within reach ( fluids, bell, call light )
- Wash your hands
- Record clients reaction to the procedure, amount of time sitting in chair, and any other observations
