Returning Client to Bed

  1. Explain what you are going to do and how client can help you
  2. Wash your hands
  3. Provide privacy (close door, pull curtains)
  4. Prepare the bed; fold down top bedding
  5. Lower height of bed - client moves toward strong side
  6. Place chair parallel to the bed - client moved toward strong side
  7. If wheelchair is used, lock brakes and place footrests out of the way. If bed has wheels, lock them.
  8. Direct client to :
    1. Hold on to the armrest
    2. Slide to edge of the chair
    3. Push down on armrests, straighten legs, and stands up
    4. Take small steps while turning back to bed until back of legs touch the bed
    5. Reach back and place hands on bed
    6. Lower buttocks into bed and slide back in bed
  9. Assist client to remove robe and shoes; place in closet
  10. Make sure client is safe and comfortable
  11. Place bed in lowest position ( raise side rails if needed )
  12. Wash your hands
  13. Record what you have done and how the client tolerated
