Positioning Client in Supine Position

  1. Explain what you are going to do
  2. Wash your hands
  3. Provide privacy (close door, pull curtains)
  4. Raise bed to convenient working height
  5. Lock wheels on bed, or push bed against wall if there are no brakes
  6. Lower rail on side where you are working
  7. Fold back top sheet. Position client on back
  8. Adjust pillow properly:

    1. Small pillow under head and shoulders
    2. Support arms and hands with a pillow
    3. Small pillow or folded towel under small of back

  9. Position other devices, such as footboard, trochanter rolls, bed cradle, as indicated in care plan
  10. Make sure client is in proper body alignment. Replace top sheet
  11. Place bed in the lowest position ( raise side rails if needed )
  12. Wash your hands
  13. Record what you hand done
  14. Note time placed in this position and when do to be turned next
