Moving Client Up in Bed When Client Cannot Help

  1. Explain what you are going to do
  2. Wash your hands
  3. Provide privacy (close door, pull curtains)
  4. Raise bed to convenient working height
  5. Lock wheels on bed, or push bed against wall if there are no brakes
  6. Lower rails on side where you are working
  7. Fold back top sheet. Lower client's head and remove pillows
  8. Prop one pillow against headboard. This will protect the client from hitting his/her head when moving up
  9. Be sure turning sheet is in position under client's body
  10. One person:

    1. Keep side rails up
    2. Stand at head of bed, feet about 12 inches apart, one foot in front of the other, facing foot of bed
    3. Roll top of turning sheet towards client's head
    4. Firmly grasp top of turning sheet in both hands
    5. Use good body mechanics- bend knees, hips, keep back straight
    6. On count of 3, shift your weight from front leg to back leg, pulling turning sheet and client up toward head of bed
    7. Several small moves may be necessary and are easier to do than one large upward move

  11. Two person:

    1. Lower both side rails
    2. Each person stands at side of bed with feet 12 inches apart, one foot in front of the other facing head of bed
    3. Roll sides of turning sheet close to clients body
    4. Firmly grasp edges of turning sheets with both hands
    5. Use good body mechanics- bend knees and hips, keeping back straight
    6. On a count of 3, both persons shift their weight from rear leg to front leg, lifting turning sheet and moving client towards head of bed
    7. Several small moves may be easier to do than one large upward move

  12. Check lower sheets for wrinkles, smooth if needed
  13. Make sure client is in good body alignment. Replace top sheet and pillow
  14. Place bed in lowest position. ( raise rails if needed )
  15. Wash your hands
