Assist Client to Sit on Side of Bed

  1. Explain what you are going to do
  2. Wash your hands
  3. Obtain materials listed above
  4. Provide privacy (close door, pull curtains)
  5. Raise bed to convenient working height
  6. Lock wheels on bed, or push bed against wall if there are no brakes
  7. Lower rail on side of bed where you are working
  8. Fold back the top bedding
  9. Get close to side of bed as possible- legs touching side of bed-so that you are level with client
  10. Position feet apart, with one foot staggered. Bend your hips and knees
  11. Ask client to move to side of bed nearest you. Assist client if needed
  12. Put up side rail and raise head of bed
  13. Place client in Fowler's position without pillows
  14. Lower bed and put side rail down
  15. Place one arm around the shoulder area and the other arm under client's knees
  16. On the count of 3, shift your weight to back leg, and slowly swing client's leg over edge of bed while pulling shoulders to sitting position
  17. Place bed in lowest position so client feet are touching the floor
  18. Remain facing the client with both hands supporting shoulders until client is stable
  19. Assist client to put on robe and footwear (with good soles). Apply gait belt if needed for the transfer
  20. Place back of chair next to bed, facing client. Have client hold back of chair to keep balance, if needed
  21. Remain with client
  22. Reverse procedure to return client to Fowlers' position
  23. Wash your hands
  24. Record client's reaction to the procedure, amount of time spent sitting on side of bed, and any other observations
