Giving and Removing a Urinal

Materials needed:

Procedure:

  1. Explain what you are going to do
  2. Wash your hands
  3. Obtain materials listed above
  4. Provide privacy (close door, pull curtains)
  5. Take urinal to bedside and place on chair or bed
  6. Assist client to stand. If client can not stand, place client on back
  7. Fold back upper linens
  8. Give urinal to client so he can position it properly
  9. If client is unable to position urinal, put on gloves and position for him
  10. Cover client with top sheet to avoid chilling and exposure
  11. Leave room. Remove gloves, if using. Discard gloves
  12. Wash your hands
  13. Return to room when client calls
  14. Put on gloves
  15. Remove the urinal in the same manner you gave it to the client
  16. Cover urinal, take to bathroom, and empty contents. Measure output if necessary. Observe urine.
  17. Rinse urinal with cold water, clean, and disinfect
  18. Remove and discard gloves
  19. Wash your hands
  20. Put urinal away
  21. Help client to wash his hands
  22. Make sure client is safe and comfortable
  23. Wash your hands
  24. Record what your have done. Report any unusual conditions
