Giving and Removing a Bedpan

Materials needed:

Procedure:

  1. Explain what your are going to do
  2. Wash your hands
  3. Obtain material listed above
  4. Provide privacy (close door, pull curtains)
  5. Raise bed to convenient working height
  6. Warm bedpan with warm tap water. Dry with paper towels
  7. Take bedpan to bedside and place on chair or bed
  8. Lower rail on side where you are working
  9. Assist client to lie on back. Elevate head of bed slightly
  10. Fold back upper linens
  11. Instruct client to bend knees and raise buttocks. Assist as needed. If bed or client is soiled, put on gloves
  12. Slide the bedpan under the client
  13. When the client cannot raise the hips to get onto the bedpan, do the following:
    1. turn the client on his/her side away from you
    2. position the bedpan firmly against the buttocks
    3. turn the client on to his/her back, while holding the bedpan in place under the buttocks
  14. Cover client with top sheet to avoid chilling and exposure.
  15. Raise side rail and place bed in sitting position
  16. Prop up client with pillows if the bed is not adjustable
  17. Make sure bedpan is in correct position
  18. Give toilet paper and ask client to call when finished
  19. Leave the room. Remove gloves, if using and discard
  20. Wash your hands
  21. Return to the room when the client has called for you
  22. Lower rail in side where you are working
  23. Put on gloves
  24. Place client in flat position and remove bedpan in same manner used to give the bedpan
  25. Cleanse perineal area with toilet tissue if necessary, wiping from front to back
  26. Raise side rail
  27. Cover bedpan, take to bathroom, and empty contents. Measure output if necessary. Observe contents
  28. Rinse bedpan with cold water, clean, and disinfect.
  29. Remove and discard gloves
  30. Wash your hands
  31. Put bedpan away
  32. Lower rail on side where you are working
  33. Help client to wash his/her hands
  34. Make sure client is safe and comfortable
  35. Place bed in lowest position ( raise rail if needed )
  36. Wash your hands
  37. Record what your have done. Report any unusual conditions
