Emptying a Catheter Drainage Bag

Materials needed:

• Disposable gloves
• Measuring container

Procedure:

1. Explain what you are going to do
2. Wash your hands
3. Obtain materials listed above
4. Provide privacy (close door, pull curtains)
5. Put on gloves
6. Place measuring container under drainage tube of collecting bag
7. Open clamp on drainage tube of collecting bag
8. Close clamp and replace drainage tube in the holder on collecting bag
9. Measuring urine, then discard in toilet
10. Rinse, clean, disinfect, and store measuring container
11. Remove and discard gloves
12. Wash your hands
13. Record what you have done. Note the amount, color, and clarity of the urine. Report any abnormal conditions.
