Applying a Condom Catheter

Materials needed:

Procedure:

  1. Explain what you are going to do
  2. Wash your hands
  3. Obtain material listed above
  4. Provide privacy (close door, pull shades)
  5. Help client to lie on back
  6. Put on gloves
  7. Cover client with sheet or bath blanket as for perineal care
  8. If condom catheter is present, remove gently and place in plastic bag
  9. Give perineal care
  10. Attach collection bag to leg or bed frame
  11. Apply protective coating to the skin of the penis, if using a self-adhesive catheter
  12. Hold penis firmly. Roll the condom catheter onto penis with drainage opening at the urinary meatus
  13. Secure edge of condom catheter in place with Velcro band. Be careful not to constrict the penis
  14. Connect catheter tip to drainage tubing
  15. Make sure tubing is in correct position and that tip of catheter is not twisted
  16. Make sure client is safe and comfortable
  17. Discard used supplies in plastic bag
  18. Remove and discard gloves
  19. Wash your hands
  20. Record what you have done. Report any abnormal conditions to the nurse or family member
